Well, it's pretty straightforward. My friend and co-worker Dave "Jiminy" Hargadon (photo at right) and his family took an awesome trip this summer and kept their friends and family up to speed on the adventure with a blog (http://hargadontrip.blogspot.com/).
Connie and I had talked for years about taking a trip like the Hargadons' in a motorhome but hadn't ever really done anything to make it happen. After reading Dave's blog we were motivated to move forward and decided to try traveling on a shorter trip in a rented trailer. Hence the "slightly less awesome vacation".
Another co-worker, Justin Eklund (AKA Sergeant Elkins), had rented a motorhome from a place just up I-80 so we reserved a 26 foot trailer there and started thinking about where we wanted to go. We'd spent a little time in Oregon in the past and decided we'd head north. I requested some travel info from the Oregon tourism website and got about a 20 pound box of fliers in the mail.

There were lot's of good ideas in the fliers, so after some time with a state map and a highlighter, the tentative plan is to head towards the California redwoods first, then the southern Oregon Coast. One of Connie's Co-workers had suggested Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, then my brother Brett said the same thing. Finally, Sergeant Zorro sent me a link to some posts one of his guys had done on a motorcycle trip (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8011722#post8011722) and he'd also gone to Prairie Creek. So the plan is to make that the first official stop.
Today was about grocery shopping and packing. We're picking up the trailer at 0930 tomorrow and hope to be on the road in the early afternoon. A high wind advisory and a trailer with no sway bar ! Suh-Weeet !

Didn't you learn anything from the RV trip to Florida that you took with your parents oh so long ago?
Have a great time. I look forward to the blog...
Randy
I am not sure what is su-weeet(er)....your driving without a sway bar with these 90 MPH winds or that picture of me. I wonder if that is what I looked like when I interviewed people.
Connie - do me a favor. When Scott is driving, slide over into the middle seat and put your arm around him. Now that would be suh-weeet!
Can't wait to hear about your first landing.
Sgt Zorro says, "I hope you picked up those headlamps in case you have to go doo-doo or fend off varmints in the middle of the night!" You picked a fine day to start out! Sgt Jiminy is right. Those are some strong winds! Capt Happy is probably frowning like a Richard-O-Lantern and Mrs Capt is cussing up a storm! You'll be lucky if you make to camp one without getting struck by lighting! Leave her on the side of the road! Anything! Just don't let her drive!
After driving the RV in to the gas station overhang on the Florida trip, I believe the lesson learned was that a truck/trailer combo. may be easier to operate. Way to test the theory by going without the sway bar in high wind conditions! I hope you, Connie, and your right ear plug made it to the coast intact (Avery says you argue alot :)
Sgt Zorro is wondering if he should start looking at some milk cartons for Capt Happy and the Mrs? Has anyone heard from them? I thought that was the whole idea of this blog stuff? We get daily reports of their progress. I'll be patient. I made it to Disneyland if anyone is interested. No sway bar, heavy winds both inside and outside the car. I'm so lucky to be at the happiest place on earth. If only Capt Happy could be here too!
Where exactly are you two? A blog is meant to update your progress so all those folks you sent your 'blog' to can make fun of you. Well, we are doing our part- lets hear from the happy couple on their vacation!
retired murray and his working woman!
OK, We had some difficulty getting Internet connectivity. We have it now and I'll post the stuff I've been writing.
